Home Out and About Chewton Mendip

The lovely village of Chewton Mendip is the focal point of the Waldegrave family estate, which grew from the success of coal and lead mining in the area durinChewton Mendip Churchg the 17 and 18 Centuries.

The famous Parish Church originated from Anglo Saxon and Norman times, and its fine 16 Century Bell tower is very much the local landmark. 

A newly reopened Village Shop sells freshly baked breads and pasties, and a wide range of other necessities, including newspapers.

Standing onCheddar Gorge the edge of the Mendip Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are many well trodden walking routes criss crossing the nearby countryside on the West Mendip Way.  There are Golf courses at Farrington Gurney (5miles) and Wells (6 miles).

There is a wide variety of traditional and modernised pubs in the area, and the music festival at Priddy (4 miles), is a popular event in the summertime.

Close by are the Caves and Gorge at Cheddar (9 miles) and Wookey Hole (6 miles) is a very popular venue for childrenWookey Hole .

The City of Wells (5 miles) with its famous Cathedral, Bishops Palace and unique medieval Vicars Close, holds a colourful market day on every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the year.  Glastonbury Tor (and of course its famous Rock Festival) are not much further away. 

Chewton Mendip, therefore, is at the very hub of many interesting and colourful venues in Somerset and the West Country.  It can also be a convenient break point on the long journey to Devon and Cornwell.
